TRAINING OF MASTER TRAINERS ON ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND

VETERINARY (Training of Veterinarians on Epidemiology, Animal Disease Surveillance, Monitoring, Control, Biosecurity etc. apart from other Aspects Relating to Care, Breeding and Management of Piggery, Poultry and Mithun)

Venue : SAMETI Training Hall, Aizawl, Mizoram Training on Animal Husbandry and Veterinary was held during 23rd – 27th September (Day 1 to Day 5), 2019 organised by FOCUS (Fostering Climate Resilient Upland Farming Systems in the North East) Mizoram in collaboration with the FAO. The training was attended by FOCUS staff, Veterinary Officers of AHVD, Govt. of Mizoram along with the resource persons from the FAO. Dr. Lalhmingthanga, Deputy Director (AHVD) attended the Inaugural programme where he welcomed everyone; highlight the various goals and objectives of FOCUS Project and encouraged the trainees to grab maximum information during the training for the progress of Animal Husbandry in the state. Day 1: Dr. Vikram Vashist conducted pre training evaluation and showed the various techniques of Animal Disease: Surveillance and Monitoring in his presentation. Dr. Girin Kalita also mentioned the breeding, housing, care and management of different categories of pigs according to the local conditions.

Day 2: On this day, we learnt about the disease outbreak investigation and management.  The emergent diseases of pigs including Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), the outbreak scenario and management of this disease was discussed. The training was productive and feedback from the trainees was very positive.

Day 3: We had a field visit to Indbro Poultry Hatchery Farm, Zoram Poultry Development Society (ZPDS), Tanhril managed by Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department. The MD, ZPDS had a lecture on the breeding, housing, feeding, care and management of backyard poultry (layers) and commercial poultry farms. We also had training session on the progressive approach on the prevailing diseases of poultry in the state.

Day 4:The team had a visit on the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Farm Complex, Thenzawl where we had visited the various farms including the Duck and Poultry Farm, Goat Breeding Farm, the ongoing Mithun Breeding Farm construction. We had also visited the Azolla cultivation farm, the silage unit and the fodder unit. These activities will be of great help in the implementation of the project in the Animal Husbandry Sector.

Day 5: The last day of the training was mainly in regard to the collection, preservation and dispatch of samples, biosecurity and disease reporting. We also learnt about the prevention, treatment and control of the various diseases of Mithun as well as the cultivation of crops, silage making for feeding of different categories of pigs. The resource person conducted a post training evaluation and after evaluation, all the members were requested to give overall feedback on the training where everyone had hearty interaction. The training session was concluded with distribution of certificates.
