REPORT OF THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT UNIT ON VISIT TO KOLASIB TO ATTEND ORIENTATION TRAINING FOR COMMUNITY ANIMAL HEALTH WORKER UNDER FOCUS PROJECT

The Orientation Training for Community Animal Health Worker (CAHW) under FOCUS Project was held on 6th August, 2019 at I&PR Conference Hall, Kolasib at 11:00 am under the chairmanship of Dr. Engkunga, District Veterinary Officer, Kolasib. The chairman welcomed and thanked all the members present for attending the meeting and introduced the staff from the PMU, DMU Kolasib and Veterinary Officers of Kolasib District. He informed the members that Veterinary sector will easily achieve success under the FOCUS Project if all the staff including the newly selected CAHWs work at their best and also mentioned that subsidiary income for farmers will be made through introduction of proper backyard poultry farming.
The Chief Guest Dr. Lalhmingthanga, Dy. Director of AH&Vety, PMU, FOCUS in his speech mentioned how the Project came into existence, its goals and objectives and how the 4 line departments – Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary and Soil & Water Conservation Department are involved for the Project. He highlighted the various Veterinary activities to be undertaken under the Project such as mass vaccination of domestic animals and poultry, construction of boar semen station, piglets distribution, pig breeding unit, slaughter slab in every village, availability of fresh meat for the people, introduction of dual purpose breed poultry, brooding unit to be looked after by the DVO along with feed and fodder demonstration.
Mr. J. Rothanga, District Project Manager (DPM) welcomed the newly selected CAHWs into FOCUS family and informed them that they along with the selected Lead farmers and Village Level Workers are all a part of the FOCUS team and are therefore, serve as an important tool for the proper functioning of the Project within their respective villages. He also requested them to work together in harmony for the success of the Project.
In the afternoon session, Ms. R. Vanlalruati, Manager-Gender and Community Institution gave presentation in regard to the roles and responsibilities of CAHW followed by speech from Dr. C. Lalawmpuia, Technical Officer (PMU) where he highlighted the detailed components under Veterinary sector. The members were instructed to be attentive when they received instruction from the DVO and to monitor their work regularly. They were also informed that they will soon receive training. A fruitful interaction and discussion was held afterwards and the meeting ended at 2:00 pm.
The Chairman gave a brief self introduction of the CAHWs and distributed engagement letter of CAHW under FOCUS for a period 1year which may be extended based on their performance. 52 CAHWs along with FOCUS staff attended the training. Amongst them, 2 Lead farmers were selected as CAHW and were asked to choose between the two; both decided to continue to function as Lead farmer.
