Green Mizoram Day was held on the 11th of June, 2020 at Zanlawn Village. A total number of 30 participants from the PMU FOCUS, DMU Kolasib, Forest Ranger Kawnpui Division and Zanlawn Village FIG members were attending the programme.

The Programme was organised with all the participants following social distancing norms and instructions. The programme started under the chairmanship of Mr. J. Rothanga, District Project Manager, DMU, Kolasib. He welcomed all members of Zanlawn village and introduced all the staff from PMU, DMU and other officials.

After briefing all about the importance of Green Mizoram Day and FOCUS project, then he requested Mr. R.K. Nithanga, SPD FOCUS Mizoram to share some thought. 

Mr. R.K. Nithanga thanked all the participants and informed that due to the Covid-19 Lockdown, other Districts FOCUS staff could not observe Green Mizoram Day but only in Kolasib District. The programme was organised by DMU-Kolasib, FOCUS in convergence with EF&CC Department, Govt. Of Mizoram under Green India Mission. 

SPD further explained the objective of FOCUS which is to increase agricultural income, and to enhance their resilience to climate change. He further explained that this would be achieved through the development objective of increasing the environmental sustainability and profitability by highland farmers while keeping in mind the Environment and Climate Change factor. 

Mr. Vanlaltluanga, Forest Ranger, Kawnpui Division thanked the Village Council, YMA members, participants and FOCUS Mizoram Project for their initiative and Convergence activity at Zanlawn, Bualpui and Thingdawl villages. He further stated that Range Officer could not attend the program today due to other official duties. Under Kawnpui Forest Range, Green Mizoram Day is observed in Zanlawn, and under Kolasib Forest Division Bualpui, Kawnpui North, Bukpui and Bairabi Range are the other area under Kolasib District where Green Mizoram Day is observed. He further explained that the objective of observing Green Mizoram Day is to counter the deforestation of forest and to reduce the practice of shifting cultivation which affects the flora and fauna of the region.

The program was followed by plantation of 100 trees saplings such as Michelia champaca(Ngiau), Terminalia myriocarpa (Char) were planted on the road side of ONGC complex, Zanlawn that were identified by the community. Clearing the site and pit digging were done before planting and all the planted trees saplings were fenced with a bamboo basket.
